Welcome to South West Sports Massage. To begin with, perhaps it is best for me to talk about how and why I came to be a Sports Massage Therapist.
When I was growing up I used to give friends and family amateur massages. I remember how I was told that I was very good at it, and perhaps it had something to do having “strong bony fingers”. I was quickly encouraged to pursue it as a career. So, when I left school I opted for holistic therapies which seemed to be growing in popularity at the time. Holistic therapies concentrates on promoting the body’s relaxation by using oils and superficial massage techniques. Valuable as it is in promoting relaxation and releasing ‘feel good’ hormones and helping detox the body, I wanted to understand the muscles and the root of pain in more detail. I wanted to understand both the graceful and dysfunctional way the body moved for each individual, find out if it could be re-balanced and if I could help restore those dysfunctional muscles to their natural state. So I qualified as a Sports Massage therapist, which teaches us to assess and re-balance the body by focusing on specific dysfunctional areas. I have suffered with upper body tension since I was a child. The simple emotional stresses of my life all seemed to end up under my shoulder blades and travel up towards my neck. Even today, years later, this upper body tension stills plagues me giving me tension headaches. I have been massaging myself against walls all my life or using massage balls, because I cannot find anyone who massages the way I would like.
Each human body develops its own ‘way of being’. We adopt our own quirks and the body adapts to its own lifestyle. Certain muscles become weaker, stronger, longer or shorter. Some muscles become so tense they become knotted and filled with pain. Some of these lumps and bumps can be easily felt in particular high tension areas of the body. It is my job as a sports massage therapist to look at the body as a whole and re-balance and readjust these muscles.
My treatments are personal and tailored to suit your requirements. I offer either 30 minute or 1 hour sessions. Depending on your location, I can travel to you or I am based centrally at Barnstaple Chiropractic Clinic which is a practice for many therapists offering a variety of treatments.
I get enormous satisfaction from making a difference in someone’s life. One of the best things I believe that you can do for someone is free them from pain - freeing them from pain without handing out a box of painkillers. The most satisfying thing about my job is hearing those success stories. The knowledge that I have contributed in relieving pain, so someone can cope better in their life is a wonderful feeling.
